The Basics of Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that removes excess fat deposits from targeted areas of the body. Liposuction slims and reshapes targeted areas and improves body contours and proportions. Many individuals struggle with losing weight in specific areas. Liposuction can help eliminate stubborn fat that seems nearly impossible to lose.  Smartlipo, a new take on traditional liposuction, has gained popularity in the plastic surgery industry.

Smartlipo vs. Traditional Liposuction

Smartlipo is laser assisted liposuction that destroys fat cells. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, therefore the patient is awake during the procedure. Traditional liposuction results in large incisions whereas the incisions from a Smartlipo procedure and relatively small. The laser tightens and firms the skin and also melts the fat. The melted fat turns into liquid before being suctioned from the body. Smartlipo is the only procedure that is proven to tighten the skin and ensure a smooth appearance.

The recovery time is drastically different between the two procedures. Rather than the days and weeks of downtime that results from traditional liposuction, Smartlipo patients only have 1-2 days worth of downtime if any at all. Smartlipo requires the patient to use a compression garment for 3 weeks compared to the 6+ weeks required from traditional liposuction. Significant bruising is experienced by many patients of traditional liposuction, however Smartlipo bruising is very minimal. Another benefit of this procedure over typical liposuction is that it is performed while the patient is awake, rather than being put under anesthesia.

Who Qualifies?

Liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure. Ideal liposuction candidates are adults that are within 30% of their ideal weight who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone. Liposuction is not an answer for weight loss, nor can it counteract lack of exercise of poor diet. The purpose of liposuction is to assist individuals in obtaining reasonable goals in terms of their appearance.
